SAS Scandinavian Airlines är being acquired by the Air France-KLM group. Its loyalty program EuroBonus (9 million members) and Air France-KLM's Flying Blue (about 30 million members) are the two programs in play. No official merger has been announced. SAS's own line is that EuroBonus "continues as today." Everything on this page about a future conversion date, a 1:1 ratio or a status map is SkyStatus modeling from historical precedent, not confirmed by SAS, Air France-KLM or Flying Blue.
Which Alliance Is SAS In Now? This is the change most people miss, and it already happened. On 1 September 2024 SAS left Star Alliance and joined SkyTeam, the alliance Air France, KLM and Delta anchor. So SAS is no longer a Star Alliance airline. Because both SAS and Flying Blue now sit inside SkyTeam, the two programs are already connected. You do not need to wait for a merger to use them together.
SAS came out of a US Chapter 11 restructuring in 2024 under an investor group led by Castlelake, with Air France-KLM, the Danish State and Lind Invest. That is the deal often tagged "Pandion" after the investment vehicle. On 4 July 2025 Air France-KLM announced it will raise that stake to a majority 60.5%, by buying out Castlelake (about 32%) and Lind Invest (about 8.6%). The Danish State keeps its 26.4% and its board seats and is not selling. For the official wording, see the Air France-KLM acquisition announcement and the SAS EuroBonus program page.
The corporate close is the trigger that would eventually enable a loyalty-program merger.
Hur lojalitetsprogrammen fungerar idag
The most useful thing in this whole story needs no merger and is live right now. Flying Blue members earn Flying Blue Miles and XP on SAS-marketed flights today, and that XP counts toward Flying Blue status. Elite recognition runs both directions. EuroBonus Silver maps to SkyTeam Elite, Gold and Diamond to SkyTeam Elite Plus. What is still not possible: a direct balance transfer between EuroBonus and Flying Blue in either direction. You cannot move EuroBonus points into Flying Blue, or the reverse, today.
No official merger has been announced. The gap clusters between 12 and 17 months, averaging around 13 to 14. If Air France-KLM closes its SAS majority in H2 2026, that math points to a EuroBonus-into-Flying-Blue conversion somewhere in H2 2027 to H1 2028, most plausibly around a full qualification year after close. One data point does support a smoother-than-average path: Air France-KLM has run this exact play before. It created Flying Blue in 2005 by merging Air France's Frequence Plus and KLM's Flying Dutchman in about 13 months, at 1:1.
Two recent cases cut the other way and are worth holding in mind. Alaska's absorption of Hawaiian was not smooth: a flash award devaluation landed around the conversion, a promised earning feature slipped, and elite thresholds rose. And Lufthansa did not convert ITA's Volare balances at all. It used a status match, let members redeem existing Volare balances in place, and moved ITA from SkyTeam to Star Alliance in the process.
Vad talar för ett 1:1-konverteringsförhållande?
The biggest question for 9 million EuroBonus members: what happens to your balance? In five of the six point-conversion cases above, legacy balances converted at 1:1. One old point became one new mile. The outlier, Virgin America Elevate, converted above parity at 1:1.3. On that base rate, 1 EuroBonus point = 1 Flying Blue Mile is the sensible expectation, and anything worse would invite serious backlash.
A 1:1 ratio can still cut your buying power, because the two programs price awards differently. EuroBonus uses a zone-based chart with fixed, predictable prices. This is not speculation. The same thing hit former Northwest members when WorldPerks folded into Delta SkyMiles in 2009: a fixed chart replaced by dynamic pricing, and points that suddenly bought less. It was the loudest complaint of that merger.
Konkreta ekonomiska effekter att vara medveten om
Here is a concrete cash hit on exactly the redemptions this guide tells you to prioritize. Flying Blue adds carrier-imposed fuel surcharges (YQ) on Air France and KLM premium-cabin award tickets, roughly 200 EUR per direction on long-haul Business, thousands of SEK on a round trip. SAS EuroBonus awards on SAS metal largely avoid these, charging taxes and fees only.
Strategic advice: if you hold a large EuroBonus balance and have a specific high-value redemption in mind, especially long-haul SAS Business, book it under the current zone-based chart. Your points will rarely buy more than they do now, and on SAS metal you dodge the Flying Blue fuel surcharges too.
EuroBonus has four public tiers (Member, Silver, Gold, Diamond) plus invitation-only Pandion. Flying Blue has five (Explorer, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Ultimate). Predicted EuroBonus to Flying Blue status mapping. Diamond-to-Platinum is the mapping that matters most. Both carry SkyTeam Elite Plus, so on-the-ground benefits are close. The catch sits underneath: Flying Blue Platinum takes 300 XP a year to requalify, and as noted above the top Ultimate tier is unreachable on SAS flying because it needs AF/KL-only UXP.
EuroBonus Lifetime Gold requires ten consecutive years of Gold status, earned each year through Level points or Level flights. Miss a single year and the counter resets to zero. SAS runs a strict no-exceptions policy on it. That matters because you cannot "sprint" to Lifetime Gold before a merger that is, at most, one to two years away. If you are at year 3 or year 6 of the streak, no amount of flying this year gets you there in time.
Flying Blue has no "Gold for Life." Its only lifetime tier is Platinum for Life, which takes 10 consecutive years at Platinum, far harder. So if Air France-KLM honors EuroBonus Lifetime Gold at all, it would have to invent a new lifetime tier to hold it. Grandfather existing Lifetime Gold as a permanent Flying Blue Gold. Convert it to a fixed-term Gold (say five years post-merger). Drop it. Do not assume this cannot happen.
You may read that a lawsuit protects lifetime members. It does not. When Continental merged into United, a Million Mile flyer sued over cut lifetime benefits (Lagen v. United). The suit was dismissed and United won. The court held the airline could reduce or discontinue those benefits because the program rules reserved the right to change. So the precedent shows lifetime status is legally exposed, not shielded.
Praktiska åtgärder för lojalitetsmedlemmar nu
- Your EuroBonus points rarely buy more than they do now. If you have been saving for Business Class to Japan, the US or Southeast Asia, book it on SAS metal to lock the fixed price and dodge Flying Blue's fuel surcharges.
- Each issued voucher is valid until the end of the following calendar year. Book while it is valid. You can travel later.
- Lifetime Gold takes ten consecutive Gold years, so it is only reachable in time if you are already at the end of an unbroken streak. If that is you, make sure you qualify for Gold this year. If you are years away, spend your effort elsewhere.
- If you fly Air France or KLM anyway, a Flying Blue status match (or the free Finnair match) can put you in the ecosystem today. If you rarely fly AF/KL, waiting for a possible auto-map may be the better bet.
- You do not have to wait. Fly SAS and earn Flying Blue Miles and XP now. Learn how XP earning, Promo Rewards, miles value and award availability work, so a conversion finds you ready.
- History shows mergers preserve core value: balances convert, status gets matched, the network grows. The transition can be bumpy, but no airline has merged and left members with nothing.
Will EuroBonus Be Absorbed, or Survive as a Brand? Most coverage treats absorption as inevitable. The honest picture is two branches, each with triggers to watch. What points here: Air France-KLM already runs a single loyalty program, folding Transavia into Flying Blue under one loyalty leadership in 2026. Every one of the seven precedents above converged the acquired program. Air France-KLM created Flying Blue itself in 2005 the same way.
What points here: IAG is the working proof that an owner can run multiple loyalty brands indefinitely. British Airways Club, Iberia Club, Aer Lingus AerClub and Vueling Club have run as separate programs for over a decade on one shared Avios currency. SAS's own on-record line is that EuroBonus "continues as today" and a full merge is "further ahead in time." And the 2026 investment pace (own Mastercard, ChangeMakers, Tryg, new members every month) is not how you treat a program you are about to shut. There is one credible report that tilts toward absorption: SAS's 2023 restructuring loan documents are reported to oblige SAS to "facilitate a merger of the loyalty programs" once Air France-KLM crosses 50% ownership, with EuroBonus itself pledged as collateral.
That is the single strongest "it is locked in" signal. But the underlying agreement is not public, it traces to one Nordic reporting chain, and "facilitate a merger" is an obligation to act, not a self-executing switch. The merger is not imminent, and it is not certain in its shape.
Operativa effekter för ruttnät och trafik
Air France and KLM throughför around 200 flights a week between their hubs - Paris-Charles de Gaulle and Amsterdam Schiphol - and SAS hub in Köpenhamn, Oslo and Stockholm. SAS has for the moment circa 44 flights per week to Paris-Charles de Gaulle from Copenhagen, Oslo and Stockholm and 65 flights to Amsterdam Schiphol. From 1 September 2024, it is already possible to book tickets via airfrance.com, klm.com, flysas.com and all other booking channels for flights departing from that date.
8 July 2026: SAS CEO Anko van der Werff announced he will leave in early 2027 to run Air Canada, exactly as loyalty-integration decisions come due. 1 December 2025: EuroBonus devalued SAS long-haul Business awards (50,000 to 60,000) and partner intra-Europe Business (up to +33%). Effective 29 January 2026 SAS Amex raised annual fees and added a negative-balance earning pause, but explicitly left the 2-for-1 voucher unchanged. Issued vouchers have a fixed, printed expiry. A voucher is valid from the date you receive it until the end of the following calendar year. You must book before that date, but you can travel after it.
Here is the fact that most undercuts the "doomed program" mood: EuroBonus is being built out, not wound down. Its own credit card. On 27 May 2026 SAS announced the SAS EuroBonus Executive Business Card, a Mastercard World Elite, full launch autumn 2026. ChangeMakers. New partners. US transfer partner. This steady expansion is a real argument that EuroBonus may not simply vanish into Flying Blue. It is being invested in like a program with a future. The 2-for-1 voucher is EuroBonus's headline card perk: two passengers fly for the points of one, worth 60,000 to 100,000+ points on a Business redemption. Flying Blue has no equivalent. So its fate is a live worry.

Vanliga frågor - korta svar
No. SAS left Star Alliance on 1 September 2024 and joined SkyTeam. Yes. Not yet. SAS and Flying Blue are both in SkyTeam, so you can earn and redeem across them today, but EuroBonus is still its own program. No official date exists. Most likely at 1:1, the standard in five of six point conversions, but no ratio is confirmed. On SkyTeam alignment, Silver likely maps to Flying Blue Silver, Gold to Gold and Diamond to Platinum. This is a prediction based on recognition tiers, not an official map. Only if you are already at year 9 or 10 of an unbroken Gold streak. Lifetime Gold takes ten consecutive years of Gold, so you cannot sprint to it. Unknown, but it is fully intact in 2026 and was repriced upward rather than cut, while SAS builds its own Mastercard. Each issued voucher is valid until the end of the following calendar year. Book before that date and you can travel later. No. There is no direct balance transfer in either direction today.
